I still have this problem. It appeared on my laptop when I upgraded to
9.10 two months ago.

Log output from 'user.log' (the first and last lines are repeated in 'messages'
and all lines except the first one is repeated in 'syslog'):
Dec 23 00:31:53 laptopname pulseaudio[10579]: pid.c: Stale PID file,
overwriting.
Dec 23 00:33:02 laptopname pulseaudio[10579]: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to
write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write!
Dec 23 00:33:02 laptopname pulseaudio[10579]: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is
a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Please report this issue to the ALSA
developers.
Dec 23 00:33:02 laptopname pulseaudio[10579]: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up
with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another
value < min_avail.
Dec 23 00:34:04 laptopname pulseaudio[10579]: ratelimit.c: 109 events suppressed

dmesg also mentions ratelimit during bootup:
[ 18.734458] __ratelimit: 9 callbacks suppressed
