gnome-mount -vbd /dev/sdb1 always succeeds in mounting the first non-
encrypted partition

however

gnome-mount -vbd /dev/sdb2 invariably fails with this message

the "Timeout for waiting for cleartext device... Exiting" warning also
comes up in gnome-mounting encrypted partition /dev/sdb3.
