I have same issue. Sound icon in notification area disappeared and no way to get it back (deleting the not area, re-installing it... several booting etc...). Is this bug related to this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-panel/+bug/432589 Seems to have some various problem with the icons in the notification area.
