@Przemysław Kulczycki: It's not because your usb hard drive is working fine that it's the same for others (in my case my LACIE 3.5" 160Go is slowing down).
And with more than 200 comments, we can see that everyone has the same symptoms but different causes. This bug report is not usefull anymore due to its life time and the quantity of reports. It seems a low level issue, lower than "cp" and "move" commands.
