While upgrading my eeepc 900 to Karmic (before I had to recover the ssd and 
fall-back to Jaunty),
I've noticed a very marked slow down of the disk operations: the upgrade 
process took quite 5 hours.

Which makes me believe that the disk corruption happens already during
the upgrade/install process.
