Binary package hint: udev
Using Karmic (9.10) with all updates applied my Ipod shuffle 2nd gen.
sometimes appear as a generic mass storage device instead of popping up
in Rhythmbox as an ipod. I suspect this is a udev bug, although I'm not
qualified enough to be certain.
Problems:
Symptom: When connecting the ipod, it either appears as a generic mass storage
device or it appears as a music player (ubuntu asks me if I want to open
Rhythmbox).
Expected: The ipod should always appear as a music player
Symptom: Even if the ipod is recognized as a music player, if Rhythmbox is not
already running the ipod does not appear in the Rhythmbox. Only if Rhythmbox is
running and the ipod is recognized as such does it appear under "Devices" in
Rhyhmbox.
Expected: The ipod should appear whether or not Rhythmbox is running prior to
connecting it.
My own debugging with udevadm monitor shows that the event pattern when
the ipod appears as storage is different from the event pattern when it
is correctly detected as an ipod. I'll attach the two monitor dumps.
Another pecularity is that udevadm info never shows ID_MEDIA_PLAYER, no
matter how it ends up detected. However, if I run a "udevadm test" on
it, ID_MEDIA_PLAYER will be set to "apple-ipod" and Rhythmbox will then
detect it.
