I'm not sure if better error reporting belongs in hdparm or not, since it's probably just passing on what the kernel says. <URL:http://sourceforge.net/projects/hdparm/> is where hdparm lives, so that's where to put bug reports or discuss it. The hdparm command has always been a relatively low level interface and Ubuntu users rarely need to use it at all. I haven't needed to use it in several years.
