I reverted the system back to karmic, (I am using it now). but
lsusb revealed something like Bus 001 Device 006: ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. in karmic the string is Bus 001 Device 006: ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem uname -srm version string was Linux 2.6.32.... sorry I don't remember more of it dmesg recognised the 2 mass storage devices but didnt say anything about the modem.
