I do not modify any script, I only try to install dkms with "apt-get install
dkms fakeroot"

I have than downloaded the dkms package from debian, change the
dkms_autoinstaller script from the one installed to the version from the
debian package.
Than I purge the incomplete installed package, and install the debian dkms
package.
After that all whent well.

because of updated to Ubuntu 9.10 I can not send you the bad
dkms_autoinstaller script
