As you said, "The sudo setpci -s nn:nn.n 4c.b=0x02 fix doesn't fix the underlying problem." That is true for me -- I don't have the SDHCI controller at all, so that fix doesn't apply.
My card reader is the TI PCI7412 -- 1 Cardbus, 2 firewire (though Gateway only gives me 1), and one media card reader.
