I tried switching to normal and the system monitor looked better until I moved the mouse and the content of the GUI window disappeared. After much difficulty I was able to return the Visual Effects to None. I'm using an IBM Thinkpad R40 notebook with an ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY video which according to what I read in Xorg.0.log is supported, but some applications now have corrupted video display after upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10. I'd be happy to provide any other info which would be useful in resolving this problem but am unaware of wht that might be.
