All I read are, IMHO, workarounds, but not more.

The problem lies with the fact that, even though firefox-3.5 honors font
configuration as configured by fontconfig-config (/etc/fonts/conf.d,
~/.font.conf, etc.), GNOME does not use the same system to configure
fonts, or at least font hinting. It seems KDE does (see bug #390975
(dupe)).

Is this a firefox bug? Or a gnome bug? Maybe neither. I don't know the
considerations of gnome to not use fontconfig-config, but I think they
want to keep all configuration in gconf?

Maybe this should be a feature in firefox-3.5-gnome-support?
