Have had same: 3 ubuntu 9.10 and 2 Windows 1 Windows 7 and 1 Windows Vista all networked and working properly. Upgraded to Lucid on 1 of the 9.10 and in that version when went into network saw Workgroup Icon when selected password and authentication window nothing from there. All other versions see other Computes and their partitions on opening network and also a icon for Workgroup. Any part of Samba.conf or any other file and I will be glad to post. Let me know what you would like posted.
Seems to be quite a few with same identical problem on Lucid upgrade.
