Additional workaround: resizing the panel by a few pixels up, then back
down, usually fixes the notification area painting for the duration of
the sessoin. This forum post
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1328838&page=2) suggests that
moving the NA applet to the left or to a different panel fixes the
problem. (There are actually a few other fixes suggested).

Also: Is this a dupe of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
panel/+bug/449910 ? Or is that a dupe of this? They look remarkably
similar.
