This system has XFCE as well as Gnome installed - when I start XFCE the behavior is somewhat different: As before, cards in the cardbus slot don't work, but the two-per-second messages regarding the cardbus don't happen.
Another problem happens under XFCE: I see at the end of kern.log the following: Dec 2 10:05:40 cupid kernel: [ 69.603395] Marking TSC unstable due to cpufreq changes Dec 2 10:05:40 cupid kernel: [ 70.140037] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -250107171 ns) Dec 2 10:16:28 cupid kernel: [ 717.365985] powernow-k8: Hardware error - pending bit very stuck - no further pstate changes possible Dec 2 10:16:28 cupid kernel: [ 717.367980] powernow-k8: transition frequency failed Dec 2 10:16:28 cupid kernel: [ 717.468015] powernow-k8: failing targ, change pending bit set Dec 2 10:16:28 cupid kernel: [ 717.528083] powernow-k8: error - out of sync, fix 0x0 0x8, vid 0x6 0x6 Dec 2 10:16:28 cupid kernel: [ 717.528095] powernow-k8: ph2 null fid transition 0x8 I believe the powernow-k8 messages only happened after I plugged a card into the cardbus slot - at least they weren't there immediately after booting. There may be some relationship here to some old bugs regarding powernow-k8 - #33846 regarding the same Averatec laptop model with a different kernel #33116 regarding various powernow-k8 problems with various kernels and various computers. ** Description changed: While booting Karmic (Alpha 6 plus updates to present time) many (30 to 50) messages "cardbus cards are not supported" are displayed. They show up in /var/log/kern.log, two messages a second. Also, no cards work in the PC card slot, while they do work under 9.04 and 8.04.3LTS. (See comments #19 and #20 below). This MAY be related to the Openchrome driver or other X software - see comment #26 below. + + Also, behavior is different when running XFCE - see comment #27.
