Public bug reported: After having a heck of a time trying to get sound working on my system, and looking into many exotic configuration files, kernel modules and hardware testing, I discovered that the real problem was decidedly simple.
The PCM volume on first install defaults to zero. If I raise it once, its perfect ever after, so it's just the initial default install settings that need changing.
