The use of "vesa" works but brings an unacceptable graphics performance. Easy to see if u scroll a website on your browser.
I found ann interessting experiment without any work: Download and start the newest version of Knoppix (5), that uses XOrg 7 and the savage driver. The website scrolling there looks much better and you also have full hardware 3D-GL support.
