Happened again with same symptoms - this time with 2 emulators running,
so the last part of /var/log/syslog is

Why should a process crashing cause GNOME to go away?   Maybe GNOME is
the root cause: it runs into a problem that causes all processes running
in any window to go away, and it happens the emulator doesn't handle
however it is taken down gracefully.
