Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel
I'm not 100% sure this is a bug in gnome-panel or whether it's in certain applets or it's a combination of them and the window manager. I have a fresh install of Karmic amd64. I have two NVidia 9600 GT cards. I'm using NVidia's driver for X from restricted. I have 2 LCD monitors hooked up to one card using twinview so they are on one X screen. I have one LCD monitor hooked up to the other card on its own X screen and that's positioned to the left of the others. I configured this using Nvidia's X Server Settings tool. I am running compiz. Everything works great except for some bizarre behaviour on the two standard top and bottom panels on the second X screen (I don't see this behaviour on the primary X screen). The first left mouse button click on either gnome-panel is handled as I'd expect. e.g. clicking on a window on the window list applet brings that window to the focus. If that first click doesn't cause anything extra to show up on the panel then any further left mouse clicks will be ignored. So for example, clicking on one window on the window list brings that window to the front, clicking on a second window on the window list does nothing. Clicking on the show desktop icon shows the desktop clicking on it a second time does nothing. Clicking on the show desktop icon to show the desktop works but then clicking on a window on the window list straight after does nothing. Clicking on the time/date brings up the calendar drop down but clicking on it a second time doesn't hide it. If I move the mouse pointer outside the panel and back in again the next left click will work. So for example if I click on the show desktop icon, move the mouse pointer outside the panel, move it back in again and click on the show desktop icon again it will respond to both clicks. Also some applets on the panel seem to not experience this problem (perhaps it depends on how they show their response to the click) for example clicking on the menubar applet's menu titles will not have the problem (I can click on them twice and it will show then hide the menu), also clicking on the indicator-session-applet twice will show and then hide the menu. Clicking on application launch icons twice will launch the applications twice. Clicking on workspace switcher twice also works. Also bizarrely if I click twice on an applet which manifests the problem such that it's ignoring additional left clicks then I can still click on one of the applets that doesn't manifest the problem and it will see the left click. So for example clicking twice on the time/date on the clock will have it ignore the second click (i.e. the calendar won't close) but if I then move and keep the mouse pointer inside the panel and click on a menu it will respond. If I click on a window title in the window list and then click again it will ignore that and if I then move inside the panel and click on the show desktop icon it will ignore that but then if I move inside the panel and click on the workspace switcher it will respond. At all times a right click will bring up the right context menu, however. So applets which I've seen show the odd behaviour on the panel are Show Desktop Button, Window List and Clock. Applets/elements which don't have the odd behaviour are the menu bar, indicator-applet-session, workspace switcher and application launch icons. I did a few google searches to see if anyone else had seen this behaviour but it was tricky to know what to search for! When I get a chance I may turn off desktop effects to see if that makes any difference.
