Confirmed. The first column has the data which has an extra space in some places due to which OOcalc was seeming to sort incorrectly. I was trying to find the extra space in the 2nd column and it took me some time till i converted the spreadsheet to csv format and looked at the data in a text editor. Can such mistakes not be allowed to occur if oocalc removes forward and trailing whitespace automatically in columns? Would this be a requested feature or is this functionality already implemented in oocalc?
Thank you for helping sort the problem.
