Thanks for the workaround Andreas.  Unfortunately, that workaround only
works if you are using the KWin window manager (the window manager that
comes with KDE).  If you're using Gnome and the Compiz window manager, a
similar but inferior workaround is to enable window rules:

 1.  Install compizconfig-settings-manager
 2.  Go to System -> Preferences -> CompizConfig Settings Manager
 3.  Click on Window Rules
 4.  Check the box that says "Enable Window Rules"
 5.  In the Size Rules tab, click New
 6.  In the Sized Windows text box, type "class=Konsole" (without the quotes)
 7.  Set the width and height to what you want (I use width=642, height=737, 
which makes it 80x40)

There are a couple of issues with this workaround:
 * it doesn't work with the Metacity window manager
 * it doesn't just apply initially -- it'll resize the window (in strange ways) 
whenever the window title changes
