I just found out that this also occurs in RhythmBox. To reproduce it in RhythmBox, do the following:
1. Open a .spx file and start it playing 2. Click the visualizations Icon (near the top) so you can see the visualization 3. Put your mouse over your visualization. A gui bar will appear at the bottom of the visualization 4. Change the visualization to or from monoscope. Notice the visualization disappears, and the song stops playing, much like with totem.
