I have a similar bug after running

grub-install /dev/sde
update-grub

It doesn't seem to matter how many times I run these commands, unlike
billBear's experience. Booting doesn't happen until I get rid of those
two lines that are identified above:

recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi

I am running reiserfs on a raid5 (/dev/md1) mounted on /.
