Hi! I had exactly the same problem on jaunty (Dell Mini 9). I solved it by installing gstreamer0.10-alsa that is not in the list of dependences of cheese (see http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/i386/cheese). After this cheese works well (at small screen resolutions).
