@Toby: I forgot about that - because of the slow SSD in the netbook, I usually mount /var/log (and a couple of others) as tmpfs, but hadn't done that on this particular install so that logs were intact.
According to /var/log/dpkg.log, the updates were tzdata, libwbclient0, winbind, smbclient, libsmbclient, and samba-common-bin.
