I forgot about that - because of the slow SSD in the netbook, I usually mount 
/var/log (and a couple of others) as tmpfs, but hadn't done that on this 
particular install so that logs were intact.

According to /var/log/dpkg.log, the updates were tzdata, libwbclient0,
winbind, smbclient, libsmbclient, and samba-common-bin.

I can't really see how *any* of those could affect suspend - especially
just suspend via lid close - so it's possible that the fact it happened
right after an apt-get upgrade was a co-incidence.
