I can confirm seeing an identical issue, specifically implicating Empathy on Ubuntu Linux 9.10 x86 connecting to OpenFire 3.6.4.

This was with one user (me), with the remaining three or so users...using Spark or Pidgin" I can reproduce this consistently. Pidgin 2.6.2 and Spark 2.5.8 clients don't result in this behaviour.
