For compiling: If you want to spare even the delay for building and installing
the package, as soon as the build process says "arch/x86/boot/bzImage is ready" 
(or the like)
cancel further processing (Ctrl+C) and just copy the new kernel over your your 
existing
experimental kernel:

cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.4-<your_existing_extra_tag_here>

Please be sure to *overwrite* an existing experimental build so that you even 
do not have
to tweak GRUB's menu.lst. Then reboot, select the new entry and voila.
