Just opening a reasonably sized file (3k) on my laptop from my desktop
(ssh://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/home/wlach/foofile) from gedit seems to work
reasonably quickly. Furthermore, I don't think gedit is trying to get
information about recently used remote files when it starts up. After
having opened several remote files and restarting gedit, I see nothing
in an strace of gedit (or gnome-vfs-daemon) that indicates it is.

This doesn't mean that the problem you're seeing doesn't exist, just
that we need more information in order to know how to reproduce it.
Providing an strace of gedit (and/or gnome-vfs-daemon? not sure if it
might be involved) when you see this abberant behaviour would probably
be where I'd start.
