I also find this issue very cumbersome. This is not a wish as extended screen is a basic configuration. The only way I have found for the moment is running xrandr in a terminal to enable/disable extended desktop. Moreover, this tool works in openSuse. There is a combo box where you can select whether each screen's position is absolute or relative, and regarding to which screen.
