I guess the flickering is normal and to be expected with the nvidia
driver. The nv driver doesn't have that problem with new kernels. Forgot
the what it is called, but with "open" drivers the kernel is now able to
set the display resolution.

Concerning gdm, I personally use kdm (it is QT based, like mythtv. I
don't know why on earth we need to load GTK for mythtv), so I can't give
the hardcore details. But you will be able to modify GDMs settings with
some files in /etc/gdm. Just look for a timeout there and set it to "0".
