terakin's crash description matches mine. It was happening before with
the previous hard drive, and I thought perhaps I had a bad hard disk. I
bought a new Seagate Momentus drive and am having the same problems.

My machine is a Dell latitude d630, and I was running a fresh install of
ubuntu 9.10.

Just now I had a crash, then a cold boot, and now I get the following
during boot:

Grub loading.
error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue>

I guess ext3 might be safer for the next install.
Any chance I can get at my data or is everything fried?

Thanks.
