For what it's worth, I no longer have this problem in jaunty for pidgin
1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8.4. Victory!

  Expected behavior:
  1. Pidgin starts normally.
  
  Unexpected behavior (steps to reproduce)
  1. Action: Launch pidgin
  2. Response: Wired connection ("auto eth0" on my machine) disconnected
  3. Response: Wired connection re-established automatically
  4. Response: Pidgin crashes (or sometimes just hangs)
