Ok, two different bugs. On toshiba laptops using toshset to activate
external monitor, you get a black screen no matter even if you use X
(also with X off, from a virtual terminal). Obviously it does not matter
whether compiz is on or not.

The problem, at least for my toshiba m400 is in the KMS module (Kernel
video mode switching). If I select nomodeset as a kernel boot option, I
can use the external monitor with toshset, and I do not get the black
screen. I am still testing what penalties do I have. I cannot use the
latest X from xorg-edgers beause it seems to require KMS activated.
