Same problem on a Samsung Q1 ultra, after upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 (yep, maybe I should have waited). i915.modeset=0 did NOT work for me.
But adding nomodeset into the boot options worked. This disables Kernel Mode Setting, i.e. video mode switching from the kernel. Clearly the KMS is still rough. I had also problems with another GM945 based laptop (external monitor could not be turned on).
