OBSERVATION: Happens to me too.
Datapoint: lspci says the Adapter is: nVidia Corporation C68 [GeForce 7050 PV / nForce 630a] (rev a2) I got a garbled screen on X startup, but I could drop to console and manually install nvidia-glx the way detailed in comment #9 . I didn't try to boot into safe mode, so no idea whether that would have worked.
