In jaunty, this only covered the core boot sequence - and didn't even include the time for the login manager to show up. In your sylvester-jaunty-20091028-1.png chart, Xorg is still initialising where the bootchart cuts off on the RHS @ 55s. Comparing that to your sylvester-karmic-20091111-4.png, Xorg finishes initialising around 45s (10s faster) - the bootchart simply then carries on to include your desktop login and the first 30-45s of your desktop usage.
