I believe I have the same problem. I think it is related to issues with the 
ath9k driver and network manager, because at first I had it happen after a few 
minutes of being logged in.
Using wicd instead I had no lockups, but as long as Ubuntu One requires 
NetworkManager, I need to use it. After some troubleshooting and doing some 
research I decided to install the new ath9k driver, which is in the backports 
modules package. This made the lockups much less frequent, but they still 
happen.
I have just reinstalled wicd to see if it really is due to ath9k/NetworkManager.
