Debbie, thank you for taking the time to make Ubuntu better. As a test, could you open a terminal (under accessories) and run the command "sudo synaptics"? This should run the synaptics package manager, which would initialize some databases. When it is finished initializing, go ahead and close it, and then try the software center again.
