Public bug reported: Just upgraded to Karmic. On both my Dell Latitude X300 and Dell Latitude D400 closing the laptop lid causes some sort of panic. I expect the laptop to standby, but in actual fact the screen goes black - apart from the mouse pointer which is fixed, but visible - and the laptop is entirely unresponsive to any and all keystrokes. The only way out is to hard reset by holding the power button down.
Searching bugs led me to try disabling KMS using the nomodeset option. This restores the correct functionality as I used to see in Jaunty. Another suggested option is to set "ForceEnablePipeA" in X, but without an Xorg.conf file in Karmic, this is not an option.
