** Description changed:

The external microphone jack is not functional on a Dell Studio 1735
- notebook under Ubuntu 9.10 (x86_64). When a plug is plugged into
- microphone jack, Ubuntu still uses the internal microphone of the
- notebook. There's also no option to enable the external jack manually.
+ notebook under Ubuntu 9.10. When a plug is plugged into microphone jack,
+ Ubuntu still uses the internal microphone of the notebook. There's also
+ no option to enable the external jack manually.

The following audio devices are in the computer (found out using 'lspci'):
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio
Controller (rev 03)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV635 Audio device [Radeon HD 3600
Series]

  1) The exact release (found out using 'lsb_releae -rd') is: 'Ubuntu
  9.10'

The audio settings are set to "Internel Audio" (not "RC635 Audio
Device") and "Analog Stereo Duplex". In the "Input" pane, "Internal
Analog Audio Stereo" is the only device shown, so there's no way to
  manually select a different input.

Version of 'alsa-base' is '1.0.20+dfsg-1ubuntu (karmic)'.
Version of 'pulseaudio' is '1:0.9.19-0ubuntu4 (karmic)'.

  3) I expected the external microphone jack to be used as the audio
source when a microphone is plugged into it.

  4) The internal notebook microphone is used instead.
