I am well aware that my solution was quick and dirty, but it worked fine for what I needed -- and pam_mount provided the tool needed. I wish I could provide you with more information on this, but recovering my data and then recreating the affected partition from scratch was my first priority. I have saved the first 5 GB of that 50 GB partition as an incomplete image file, if that is any help to you. For my new partition, I have happily set up crypttab and fstab.
