@mac.ryan I have a DELL XPS M1710 as well. I didn't try Daniel T Chen fix, but #17 (master and LFE to ignore, then set set them to 100% in alsamixer , then volume will be controled through PCE) solved part of the problem, i can now controll the volume with the front keys and it's not blowing the speakers on startup. At ~15% though it still goes to 0 with some weird noises.
