On Karmic just installed, I got the same problema (on the DELL Dimension
C521). The issue seems to be only in the front plug, the rear plug work
great. The same issue was present also in Ubuntu 9.04, but now the fade
out is less fast and and sanmetime resetted, so the fade out can start
again.

System:
