I think I just experienced the same error. My wifi connection died just before Ubuntu One reported a fatal error. I tried to start Ubuntu One again after re-establishing wifi connectivity, only to have it report the same error (but not kill wifi again).
My wifi connection has been very unstable for the last couple of days; I think somebody else may be using the same frequency as me, and this interference is probably what affected U1.
