I went ahead and tried the Live CD again using "live video=ofonly" option. Result: Boots to desktop. The install kubuntu 9.10 starts again but stops after pressing forward (this is at the welcome screen and choose language option). One other thought, it did get the time from the network server, and then it stopped.
