Similar problem happened to me. I would say that I connected to the hidden network once, even if I don't remember if that was when using jaunty or after upgrade to karmic.
What I'm totally sure is that I've attempted to connect to a hidden network (with no password needed) and the network-manager-applet fails to connect to that network. The network exists and works fine.
