This is a big problem when, for example, I want to install a lot of TrueType font packages, as I do now. Maybe a quick temporary fix could be done by simply having Synaptic default to sorting by Package; this might be easier than making the user's column choice sticky, and I suspect most users usually sort by Package anyway.
