oops, disregard my comment above. $> PATH="/usr/lib/ccache:${PATH}" which gcc /usr/lib/ccache/gcc so this works in ubuntu, too. (Installation path of the ccache wrappers is just slightly different from the one in gentoo, which I didn't notice at first.)
$> VARIABLE='value' echo $VARIABLE outputs the old value of the variable (or just a newline, if unset) on gentoo, too.
