In 9.04 I had the problem with my proxy and the applets not connecting through it, the fix was easy. System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy then add the proxy settings in manual proxy configuration, but selected Automatic proxy configuration. It seemed as if the Applets only checked the Manual Proxy Config. But now in 9.04 this does not work any more.
