I get a similar behaviour although not as extreme as Rob. Mutter takes up to 400 Megabyte of RAM and has spikes in CPU-Usage for up to 90% for no apparent reason. I have filed a bugreport in gnomes bugzilla: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=600491
